CONTRIBUTIONS OF $250.00 OR ABOVE
The parish data software currently used at the church office to record your contributions provides a detailed listing of any contribution of $250.00 or above that you have made during the calendar year. This list is included on the end of the year Donor Substantiation Report that is sent to you as documentation for Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) tax purposes after the close of a calendar year. As a cost saving move for the parish and since this detailed listing on the year-end report meets the documentation requirements of the IRS, the individual tax/letter receipt that has been sent up until now each time a $250.00 or above donation has been made, is being discontinued.
In the future, if you would like to receive an individual acknowledgement for a $250.00 or above donation that you make to the church, please contact the church office and specify if you wish to receive a paper receipt/letter through the mail or via an email. For inquiries about this change, please contact the office.

ARE YOU CALLED TO BECOME CATHOLIC? KNOW SOMEONE WHO MIGHT BE?
Anyone interested in exploring a call to become Catholic or in completing their Catholic sacraments of initiation - Baptism, First Eucharist and Confirmation - is invited to contact Fr. Marc about joining The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), the official process of faith formation and spiritual conversion by which someone is brought into the church. You can contact Fr. Marc at the office or at the rectory, leaving a message at either number if needed. Both numbers are listed in the bulletin.

Do you have any receipts from Thriftway or Vashon Market laying around? Please put them into the wooden boxes in the vestibule. (Receipts from Thriftway need your name & phone number on them.) They will be tallied for our refund!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT DINNER - Head Cook Needed The Wednesday Night Dinner Program, which has been running for over 20 years, needs a Head Cook for the second Wednesday each month beginning this Dec. 14th. The Head Cook uses the journal kept at the Church of the Holy Spirit to see how many customers have been coming, what food has been prepared over the month, and what food is available from the freezer to design a meal. This volunteer job is well supported: the prior head cook will train you and sous chefs are ready to help prepare the food. Skills needed are being able to work with others and being decisive. One Wednesday per month for about 6 hours (12:30 - 6:30 through serving). For more info, email Amy Huggins: amyhugs@comcast.net, or call 206-851-7159.

Peter Sartain writes, " Old or young, sick or healthy, poor or wealthy, famous or unknown, brilliant or average, friend or enemy, guilty or innocent, each of us is His beloved, His jewel. Because we are precious to Him, He teaches us through his Son Jesus to love one another with His love, as He loves." CONTRIBUTIONS OF $250.00 OR ABOVE

IMPORTANT
Chances are you have recently received a phone call - or will receive one shortly - asking if you would like to have your birthday noted on a planned parish calendar. The Stewardship Commission is in the process of finding out if enough parishioners would like to participate to make it a worthwhile effort. We hope to not cause concern or controversy, but to provide an opportunity for each of us to offer a prayer for the birthday people and perhaps wish them a "Happy Birthday", should we wish to do so. If the interest warrants it, the next phase will to have people submit photos for a contest for the 12 months to be included with the calendar. The finished product would sell only for the needed amount to cover printing expenses and would, hopefully, help to bring an awareness of our unity. If you have questions, call Nancy Radford at 463-2142.

IMAGINE
Imagine for a moment that someone risked their life to save yours, even though your situation occurred because of your own mistakes. To what extent would you go to express your gratitude to them? Would you ever be able to really live a day without remembering them and somehow saying thanks? Imagine for a moment that someone gave their life to save your soul, even though your situation occurred because of our own mistakes. Oh, Someone did! For all of us? How can we express our gratitude to Him? Does a day ever go by without remembering what He did for us? And how do we remember to say thanks in some way?

PUSH BACK ON POVERTY
Every Friday starting in October, volunteers will be cooking potluck meals for low income island neighbors who are on the verge of homelessness or are homeless. The free meal will be at the Lutheran Church on Friday evenings. This is part of a Network of Social Services pilot meal program from October through the cold months. To volunteer for this or to help with another free meal, please call Deb Dammann 567-4268.
These meals, together with two Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness meals at the Presbyterian Church, Wednesday Night Dinner, a meal provided by the Eagles on Mondays, and a free lunch on Sundays at the Methodist Church are efforts to help take a bite out of budgets stretched so thin that people risk losing their homes. Island churches, the Food Bank, the Senior Center, Rotary, the Gates Foundation, Kiwanis, the Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness, St. Vincent de Paul, the Salvation Army, Vashon Youth and Family Services, King County Housing Authority ---- all these and other organizations are focusing on the prevention of homelessness and hunger. Let's be part of the solution! Want to help? Join a meal team!

LABOR DAY STATEMENT
"On this Labor Day in 2011, in the midst of continuing economic turmoil, we are called to renew our commitment to the God-given task of defending human life and dignity, celebrating work, and defending workers with both hope and conviction. This is a time for prayer, reflection, and action. In the words of our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI:
The current crisis obliges us to re-plan our journey, to set ourselves new rules and to discover new forms of commitment, to build on positive experiences and to reject negatives ones. The crisis thus becomes an opportunity for discernment, in which to shape a new vision for the future (Caritas in Veritate, no. 21)."

GOD CALLING
When your phone rings do you check caller ID before you answer? What if it read "God", How many of us wouldn't answer? It is very tempting not to some times. However, God is calling each of us to be his stewards, just as he called the apostles. He is not just asking for a donation of money, but of time and talent also. He knows that in this busy time we often have limited time to give, but He is asking each of us to do that, according to our real ability. How many of us would answer our phones?

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

Your support is critical to the success of the Annual Catholic Appeal and its many ministries and services. Today I am asking every one of you to commit to making a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal. The reason is not just because the church has a need - which it does, and not just because the causes are worthy - and they are, but especially because this is part of what is means to be Catholic.
This year's total goal is $10M. Our parish portion of this goal is $33,877.00.
"Every gift will make a difference, but the reality is that some of your fellow parishioners will not be able to financially support the Appeal this year. In light of the continued difficult economic environment, would you consider a gift of $1 a day, or $365 or more, to make up for those who cannot give in 2011?"

ARE YOU INTERESTED?
There will be a meeting for anyone interested in planning a fundraiser for SJV - should we have a dinner? auction? entertainment? Any ideas? Join us on Sunday, June 5 at 9:00am (between Masses) to discuss.

BILINGUAL MASS ON HIATUS
Dear parishioners:
I was hoping the bilingual English-Spanish mass would attract more of our Hispanic/Latino brothers and sisters to the community, but this has not been the case. Given this unrealized goal, and because we have only limited funds to work with to continue hiring our gracious Deacon Pardo, I've decided to put the bilingual mass on hiatus.
Our Parish Council is developing a 5-year plan for the parish, which includes priorities for community outreach and sacramental programming. I would like to get their recommendations on how to best reach out to the Hispanic/Latino community as part of the Long-Range Planning process and, after also consulting with the community, determine if a bilingual mass is the best tool for the future. Through our trial run of the bilingual mass, I and the staff have been able to pinpoint key leaders in the Hispanic/Latino community, and hopefully we can encourage them to be part of developing this future plan for outreach.
I am very proud that we tried the bilingual mass and that it sprang from a perceived need of a segment of the Catholic population on our Island that was not being directly addressed. I am also proud of the parish community's enthusiastic embrace of the bilingual mass' trial run and the excellent work our deacon has put into his proclamation of the Word and his prayerful homilies aimed at serving our parish.
Last weekend will be the last bilingual English/Spanish mass. If the parish 5-year plan and consultation with the community recommends we re-instate it at a later date, I will seriously consider doing so.
Easter peace,
- Fr. Marc

I will be asking each weekend until I've heard from everyone. We will have a witness speaker presentation next weekend which will be your first opportunity to return your pledge envelope at Mass. Dear parishioners:

It's been a busy year for new ministries and events at St. John Vianney. Let me count the ways ...

- A new team-approach to the RCIA process that moved to between Sunday masses, which attracted 5 participants, compared to 0 last year.
- A new once-per-month bilingual English-Spanish Mass, and a deacon assisting at this liturgy reaching out to the Hispanic community on our island.
- A new lay-led Lenten Men's Group.
- A new Stewardship-Committee sponsored volunteer-appreciation dinner.
- A new adult faith-formation series that began with a Susan Vreeland book-study, then a Dramatic Reading fundraiser, and finally a play production at Blue Heron.
- A new lay-led ministry aimed at praying for an end to abortion and raising awareness about Church teaching around the issue.
- A new lay-led ongoing Ecumenical Book Study.
- A new lay-led ongoing Contemplative Prayer Group and a new 3-part introductory Lenten retreat centered on Contemplative Prayer.
- An almost all-new Pastoral Council that is beginning Long-Range Planning, which will produce a new 5-year plan for the parish.
- An education facility upgrade with new partitions.
- A new plan for St. Patrick's Chapel, which includes turning the property over to the Archdiocese, which will sell it and give 75 percent of that sale back to SJV, a plan that brings a 10-year question to resolution.

After vacation and Priest Days in June, I look forward to the new year starting July 1. My main four priorities for the new year, which I hope to achieve with the help of our talented and dedicated staff, volunteers, councils, committees and parishioners:

- Continue to re-structure and improve RCIA.

- Continue Long-Range Planning and creating a 5-year plan with the Parish Council. Also, help the new council work well as a team.
- Help the Finance Council set goals and priorities for the next year, synchronizing these goals and priorities with the emerging 5-year plan as much as is possible.
- Continue to offer faith-formation projects that marry art and religion by encouraging Catholics to use their faith and tradition to engage modern literature and theatre.
In Christ,
- Fr. Marc

Archbishop says auxiliary's appointment a blessing and honor
(Seattle) Commenting on the announcement by the Vatican on Tuesday, April 12 that Archdiocese of Seattle Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Tyson has been appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Yakima, Archbishop J. Peter Sartain said it was a blessing that reflected the gifts of the local clergy.

"We will miss him, of course." Archbishop Sartain said upon learning that Pope Benedict XVI had accepted the resignation of Bishop Carlos Sevilla, who had submitted his resignation in August 2010 having reached the mandatory age of 75, and appointed Bishop Tyson as the seventh bishop of the Diocese of Yakima.
"It's also an honor for the Archdiocese of Seattle that the Vatican has recognized the talent of one of our priests by naming him bishop of Yakima," Archbishop Sartain said. "It speaks of the quality and pastoral skills of our priests here in the Archdiocese of Seattle.

"It also is a blessing for the Diocese of Yakima because Bishop Tyson was born there," Archbishop Sartain said.
Bishop Tyson was born in Moses Lake in 1957 and raised in Seattle, where he graduated from St. Alphonsus Elementary School in Ballard. He graduated from Bishop Blanchet High school in 1975 and attended the University of Washington where he earned undergraduate degrees in Russian and Eastern European Area Studies and editorial journalism in 1980.

He completed his master's degree in International Relations at the University of Washington Jackson School of International Studies in 1984. In 1989, he received his masters in divinity from the Theological College at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Seattle.

Bishop Tyson's appointment is a blessing because he will be missed," said the archbishop. "I have enjoyed working with him and have grown to appreciate his intelligence and skill, the qualities that will enable him to share the good news of Jesus Christ with the people of the Yakima Diocese."

APRIL IS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH!
I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE!
In today's readings, we hear several stories of new life emerging from death. The tragedy of child abuse has shown to us we need to look at prevention in a whole new way. Preventing child abuse is everyone's responsibility! Here are a few ideas to get you started:
• Listen to Your Children. Strong communication is the foundation for helping children stay safe. Frequently ask them about places they have been and people they have met. Teach them to say NO if someone tries to touch them and let them know they won't be in trouble for telling you if something happens.
• Create a safe environment for children by inspiring others to participate. This could be as simple as inviting someone to a Safe Environment class. If you invited one person a month, at the end of the year there are 12 more people trained in child abuse prevention and even more kids being protected! A schedule of classes can be found at: www.seattle.setanet.org/classes.php.
• Did you know that teachers, employees, coaches and volunteers in the Archdiocese of Seattle receives abuse prevention training and must have a background check in order to work with children? But what about the children who attend non-Catholic schools? Talk with school administrators and athletic programs to find out what steps they take to protect children.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING
A Safe Environment class - Called to Protect for Parents and Families will be offered at 11:00am on Thursday, April 14th in the Conference Room. Please contact the office for more information or to register

APRIL IS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH!
In today's gospel, Jesus opens the eyes of a man blind since birth and gives him the gift of sight. Child abuse is a tragedy that affects the entire community but many people are blind to it. One in every four girls and one in every five boys are sexually abused before the age of 18; 90% of those victims are abused by someone they know. Although we would like to think abuse only happens to "other people," the reality is most of us know someone affected by this tragedy and it is time to open our eyes.
Throughout the month of April, you will find information and resources each week in the bulletin as we will pray together for the eradication of child abuse. For more information about the child abuse prevention, contact the parish office or find more information at: www.seattlearch.org/sep.

Homily by Deacon Anslemo
Fourth Sunday of Lent - Jesus Cures the Blind Man: Jn 9:1-41

Short Intro

In the Gospel story Jesus restores the sight of a blind man. Since most of us have sight, we may think that this gospel story does not apply to us. Yet, on the contrary, it does apply to us in a way that we may not be aware of. Though we may not be physically blind, we may be spiritually blind. We may have a different kind of blindness, a blindness that does not allow us to see the needs of others. This type of blindness can be spiritually harmful. How does my blindness affect others around me? We may ask ourselves these questions;
Does my selfishness make me blind to the needs of others?
Does my insensitivity blind me to the hurt I may be causing others?
Does pride blind me and does not allow me see and correct my own faults?
Does seeking material things cause me neglect of spiritual values?
These are only a few of the questions we can ask ourselves regarding spiritual blindness.
This gospel also shows the lack of faith on behalf of the Pharisees. They focused more in discrediting Jesus than to believe in his compassion. Compassion is not a virtue easily attained. It calls us to be other person oriented, to give rather than receive. Yet compassion nurtures us in such a special way such that when we act compassionately, we are the ones that gain the most.

Finally we are called by Jesus to be the light of the world. In baptism, our God parents held a lit candle to remind us that Jesus is to be our guiding light. But then at some time in our lives, we ourselves are called to be that light to others. Our world needs to be illuminated by the light of Jesus which brings love, compassion, forgiveness and a hope for a better future and that is where we can help.

LENT GUIDELINES
Fasting: (Ash Wednesday & Good Friday) Fasting consists of having only 3 meals on that day - 2 small meals that when combined do not add up to the third meal. It is the person's choice which meal is to be the ‘main' meal. The liquids we drink do not count as violating the fast. This applies to people 18-59.
Abstaining: (all Fridays during Lent) Abstaining means refraining from eating any meat (chicken, beef, pork, etc.) Dairy products and fish can be consumed. When abstaining, meat products, if used as seasoning and not seen as a meat dish, do not violate the rule for abstinence. This applies to people 14 and older.
Illness and the infirmities of age excuse one from observing these rules.

As the weather improves and more of our children go outside to play during the Sunday coffee hour, we have roped off the parking lot area nearest the basketball hoop. Dear Members of the Church of Western Washington:
As members of the Archdiocesan Finance Council, we assist Archbishop Sartain and his staff in the oversight of financial matters of the Archdiocese of Seattle. This report is published in our Catholic newspaper "The Catholic Northwest Progress". You can also find the report on the Archdiocesan website: www.seattlearchdiocese.org/Archdiocese. Select the link titled: 2009-2010 Annual Report.

LENTEN PENANCE SERVICE - Monday, April 11th, 7:00-8:00

CONFESSION - NEW SCHEDULE
Saturday confessions will now be offered as needed. If you need to go to confession on Saturdays, please call Fr. Marc at 567-5736 or 225-8058 and let him know. Marc ahead of time and schedule a confession for Sundays between the Masses from 8:45 - 9:15 a.m.

CHANGING LOCKS AND RE-ISSUING KEYS
After consulting with the Parish Council and my staff about, foremost, internal matters of office safety and security, I've decided to change the locks on the parish building and set up a new, improved system for handing out keys to all who need them and keeping track of those keys with a check-in/check-out list managed by Constance Walker and Nancy Radford. In addition to safety and security, the locks on our building have not been replaced in over 10 years. Parishes routinely change locks each decade or so because locks begin to wear out and some of ours currently need replacing. So again, for internal security reasons and to replace worn-out locks I, after consulting with my staff and the Parish Council, have decided to change the locks and re-issue keys to those who need them. I ask your patience and understanding as we move forward with this process.

If you cannot help in this way, please consider volunteering for the occasional seasonal opportunities such as fall leaf and storm cleanup and Rosary Garden sprucing that will be announced in the bulletin. Your gift of time will be abundantly blessed! Interested? Please call Robert Kajca - 253-579-4682

NATIONAL MIGRATION WEEK
Renewing Hope, Seeking Justice is the primary theme for the 2011 National Migration Week. This observance began over a quarter century ago by the bishops to provide Catholics an opportunity to take stock of the wide diversity of the Church and the ministries serving them. The Church believes that current immigration laws and policies have often led to the undermining of immigrants' human dignity and have kept families apart. The bishops of the United States are strong supporters of comprehensive immigration reform. Pope Benedict XVI has placed focus this year on migrant families. His words to us are, "I want to encourage you and your communities to continue to welcome the immigrants who join your ranks today, to share their joys and hopes, to support them in their sorrows and trials, and to help them flourish in their new home." A LETTER FROM PAUL WILKIN TO THE PARISHIONERS OF SJV
An update on my discernment of a call to priesthood or brotherhood.
You may already be aware of my discernment from a surprise announcement at a 10:30 Mass in February by Fr. Paul Magnano. It is a blessing to have the parish now aware of my journey. I have been actively discerning God's will of me for the past fifteen months. This journey will continue for many years.
My discernment starts with daily prayer, a monthly meeting with a spiritual director and discussions with guidance from Fr. Marc Powell. The process has included: group discernment meetings with the Archdiocese of Seattle, inquiries and meetings with other orders and archdioceses such as the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Glenmary Home Missioners, Paulists, Maryknoll and the Jesuits. Seminary will take seven years or more to complete.
Thank you for your encouragement and prayers. Please pray for vocations, seminarians and those discerning a religious call. Feel free to have a chat with me about my discernment, there is more than I can express here.
Blessings & Prayers, Paul Wilkin

SIMBANG GABI - 10:30 Mass
Welcome Fil-Am Society Choir as we celebrate Simbang Gabi!
You will see a Parol as part of the processional for the Mass. What is a Parol? This star shaped lantern is displayed in homes in the Philippines to serve as a light and a sign for Mary and Joseph, and more importantly, Jesus, to come into the home. It is used to remind us that Jesus is the Light of the World bringing life and light to all who accept Him. For more information about Simbang Gabi please see the bulletin attachment explaining its history and significance. And please join us and the Fil-Am Choir for a Filipino-style Feast in the Social Hall following the Mass.

Thank you for your continued generosity in helping those in need to have a blessed Christmas this year.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION COORDINATOR NEEDED

SJV AWARDED SMALL BUSINESS LIGHTING REBATE GRANT FROM PUGET SOUND ENERGY
Our parish has been awarded a grant from PSE to replace all of our T-8 Lamps and Ballasts with approved CEE (Consortium for Energy Efficiency) and Energy Star qualified bulbs. The grant should cover over 60% of the expenses for this upgrade and work will begin sometime after the first of the year. Once the upgrade has been completed the parish will save approximately 40% per year in electric lighting costs.

COLD WEATHER SAFETY
As parishioners come and go at the church building this time of year, space heaters are often turned on to keep an area more comfortable. For safety reasons, please ask a staff person to turn on and place all space heaters and refrain from turning them on yourself. The staff person will then be responsible for seeing that any heaters used are turned off and unplugged. This is especially important on weekends.
